Biography
FELIX PHANG,
Composer/Arranger/Upright Bassist/Sound Artist/Educator
Music Director of Summertimes BigBand

Felix Phang.
Classically trained in the early part of his music education, Felix Phang learnt a variety of instruments, such as the violin, trombone and the double bass. It began with a fascination in the sounds these instruments make, and when Felix mastered them it developed into a deep passion in musical composition.
It is not too far-fetched to consider Felix as something of a musical virtuoso. After graduating in Jazz Composition from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 2008, he has been exploring and creating music via technology. Equally proficient in both the classical and modern, performance and ararngement, Felix has a long list of achievements in what is only the beginning of his musical career.

The Summertimes Big Band
The Summertimes Big Band was formed with the objectives of friendship and more importantly – to play good music, with great musicians, for an even greater audience.

Members of the big band have mostly been either colleagues at various ensembles, or have met onstage the many jazz groups island-wide. Three-quarter of the musicians are practicing professionals, with the remaining quarter having been a professional sometime in their lifetimes. The coming together to form their band is a culmination of decades of friendship and musical synergy- thereby creating what is now a dynamic team of a big band.
With a current line-up of 19 musicians, the band has set its eyes to becoming one of Singapore’s most active big bands – endearing a commitment to bringing back the swinging summer days of stompin’ savoy. We want audiences thrilled, and therefore play music in a fashion that never fails to excite even dancers and fellow musicians.
The music of this band will enunciate and expound the exuberant energy that flows beyond the dull practicalities of life today. Promise. Afterall, it is music from our hearts, to yours.

Felix Phang & The Jazz Cats
The music of Felix Phang & The Jazz Cats will create and recreate music of the moment – when borders and boundaries of artistic exploration, improvisational perimeters and performance routines will be trespassed.
Culminating alongside their music are elements of spontaneous experimentation and execution which would accentuate the modern nuances of contemporary jazz.

The Shanghai Swingers
The Shanghai Swingers, an old-school oriental jazz band, plays the music of olden day Shanghai. Reflecting the western-influenced days of glamorous cheong sums and rustic splendor, this east-meets-west concept never fails to captivate audiences with its authentic depiction of the time.
Consisting of four prodigious jazz musicians and a lovely chanteuse, the music of the Shanghai Swingers continue to keep audiences enchanted and dancers swinging all night through.

PMP
PMP is an audio-visual Collective that focuses on the synaesthetic experience where sound and visuals react in real time, steering away from the notion that audio and visuals are often the by-products of one another.
Started in 2009 by Ivan Lee, Felix Phang and Bin, PMP’s music takes the form of minimal electronic music that is a fusion of computer generated sound, glitches and acoustic instruments while visually, it is highly distinctive with generative visuals that reacts or controlled in real time.
Since forming in 2009, PMP has since performed in events such as Fred Perry 100 year anniversary, Juice Anniversary Party,1 year anniversary party of Kizuki+LIM and is commissioned to perform at the Singapore M1 Fringe Festival 2011.
